The Standard Posture: A Myth Without Scientific Basis

Abstract: The 'standard posture' described in the renowned manual Muscles, Assessment and Function with Posture and Pain is considered the reference position for postural assessment. Any deviation from this standard is considered a postural alteration that may have implications for patient symptoms. However, none of the editions of the aforementioned manual include bibliographic references that would allow the design of that position and its true value in evidence-based clinical practice to be evaluated.
Abstract : La “postura estándar” descrita en el prestigioso manual ‘Músculos, valoración y función con Postura y Dolor’ está considerada la posición de referencia para la evaluación postural. Las diferencias respecto a este estándar se consideran alteraciones posturales con posible implicación en la sintomatología de los pacientes. Sin embargo, en ninguna de las ediciones del citado manual se incluyen las referencias bibliográficas que permitan evaluar el diseño de esa postura y conocer su verdadero valor en una práctica clínica basada en la evidencia. Objetivo: Revisión de alcance para identificar la fuente original y el procedimiento seguido para el diseño de dicha postura y compararla con literatura actual sobre el tema.
