Abstract: This presentation describes the birth and development of professional physiotherapy in Catalonia from the 1950s to the present day, drawing on the testimonies of those involved and the intersection of ethnography and historiography—two indispensable methodological tools for understanding a relatively new profession that did not achieve full academic legitimacy until the Spanish Transition. The presentation explores the living memory of three generations of professionals—some from abroad and others local—who pioneered the field from scratch and went on to train the educators who shaped the profession as it exists today. It documents the origins and specific characteristics of the profession through a narrative showing how physiotherapy has been embraced by the public as an essential element of modern society and its healthcare system. Between 1957 and 1980, the first generations of Catalan physiotherapists built their knowledge and experience primarily through applied practice. This compelled them to ask questions, evaluate their work, and recognize the need for specific—and, crucially, continuing—education. This dialectical process gradually but inexorably shaped the public's emerging perception of physiotherapy, extending beyond the patients themselves to the population at large. The development of physiotherapeutic knowledge has been the result of a long-term process of empirical learning about the body, requiring a functional understanding of human anatomy and an appreciation of the hands as a therapeutic tool. Addressing the history and ethnography of physiotherapy today raises a preliminary question: what were the key factors that allowed this field—alongside occupational therapy, clinical psychology, speech therapy, nutrition, dietetics, medical anthropology, and medical sociology, among others—to become established as regulated, well-developed professions in Catalonia, albeit with a significant lag compared to other Western countries? The delayed arrival of academic physiotherapy and other health professions in Spain requires an approach that combines history and political economy, drawing on documentary evidence, oral history, and ethnographic records to illustrate the transition across three periods in which academic knowledge and clinical practice intersect. An initial period of specialization in physiotherapy for Technical Health Assistants (ATS) beginning in 1957; a period of university-level diploma studies—which in Catalonia began in 1983—that would lead to the emergence of professional associations; and, finally, the advent of the European Higher Education Area, featuring bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs in physiotherapy.

Abstract : La ponència descriu al naixement i desenvolupament de la fisioteràpia professional a Catalunya des de la dècada dels cinquanta fins a l'actualitat a partir del testimoni dels seus actors i de la intersecció entre l'etnografia i la historiografia, dues eines metodològiques indispensables que han permès comprendre una professió molt recent que no va assolir la seva plena legitimació acadèmica fins a la Transició espanyola. Es tracta d'una presentació sobre la memòria viva de tres generacions de professionals, alguns i algunes vingudes de l'estranger i altres del país, generacions que han estat pioneres des del no-res a allisonar formadors i formadores que han donat lloc a la professió actual. En la ponència es deixa constància dels orígens i les especificitats de la professió a través d'un relat que mostra com la fisioteràpia ha estat incorporada per la ciutadania del país com una peça indispensable en la societat actual i en el seu dispositiu sanitari. Les primeres generacions de la fisioteràpia catalana entre els anys 1957 i 1980 van construir coneixement i experiència sobretot a partir de la pràctica aplicada, que els va obligar a fer-se preguntes, a avaluar-la i a entendre que els calia formació específica i, més encara, continuada. Aquest procés dialèctic va anar-se projectant, lentament però inexorablement, sobre la imatge incipient de la fisioteràpia en el conjunt dels ciutadans, i no solament en els pacients. El desenvolupament del saber fisioterapèutic ha estat el fruit d’un procés secular d’aprenentatge empíric sobre el cos que requeria un coneixement funcional de l’anatomia humana i el valor de l’ús de les mans con a eina terapèutica. Abordar avui la història i l’etnografia de la fisioteràpia planteja la qüestió prèvia de quines han estat les claus perquè aquest camp, la terapèutica ocupacional, la psicologia clínica, la logopèdia, la nutrició, la dietètica o l’antropologia mèdica) i la sociologia mèdica, entre d’altres, hagin arribat a constituir-se en professions reglades i ben desenvolupades a Catalunya amb un retard notable en relació amb els altres països occidentals. El retard de l’arribada a Espanya de la fisioteràpia acadèmica i d’altres professions sanitàries requereix abordar-la des d’una perspectiva que combina la història i l’economia política a partir d’una base documental, de la memòria oral i del registre etnogràfic que mostra el transit entre tres períodes que interrelacionen el coneixement acadèmic amb la prctica clínica. Un periode inicial a partir de 1957 d’especialització en fisioteràpia pels ATS, un període de diplomatura universitària que a Catalunya es produeix a partir de 1983 i que derivarà en el naixement de l’associacionisme professional. Finalment, l’arribada de l’Espai Europeu d’Ensenyament Superior amb estudis de grau, màter i doctorat en fisioteràpia.
